Many people hear that summers in South Korea are hot and humid, and that's absolutely true. However, what often surprises visitors is how easy it is to stay cool throughout the day.

One of the biggest reasons is that air conditioning is everywhere. Shopping malls, cafés, restaurants, convenience stores, subway stations, movie theaters, and even many small businesses are equipped with air conditioning. If the heat becomes uncomfortable, you can usually step indoors and feel the temperature difference almost immediately.

Cafés are another major advantage during the summer. South Korea has an incredible number of cafés, making it easy to find a cool place to relax with an iced coffee or another refreshing drink. If you're looking for entertainment, arcades are also common and provide a comfortable, air-conditioned place to spend some time while escaping the heat.

Convenience stores are equally helpful. They are found on almost every block in many cities and sell cold bottled water, sports drinks, iced tea, and other refreshing beverages at affordable prices. Staying hydrated is simple, and you rarely have to walk far to find a place to buy a cold drink.

Of course, there is one exception. The hottest two to three weeks of summer can be extremely hot, with high humidity making it difficult to spend long periods outdoors. During this peak heat, sightseeing in the middle of the afternoon may not be enjoyable.

The best strategy is simple: plan outdoor activities in the morning or evening and spend the hottest part of the day indoors. Visiting a café, shopping mall, museum, or arcade during the afternoon can make your trip much more comfortable.

So yes, Korean summers are undeniably hot, but they are also surprisingly manageable. With air conditioning almost everywhere, plenty of places to cool off, and easy access to cold drinks, there are many practical ways to enjoy the season without letting the heat ruin your day.
