The OTT market in South Korea has a somewhat different structure compared with many other countries. Among the major streaming services, Netflix and Disney+ have a particularly strong presence, especially when looking at OTT services purely from a streaming and entertainment perspective.
Netflix has established itself as one of the most familiar streaming platforms in Korea, offering a wide range of Korean dramas, movies, international content, and original productions. Disney+ also has a strong position thanks to its global franchises, movies, and exclusive content. As a result, when people think about pure OTT streaming services in Korea, Netflix and Disney+ are often among the first platforms that come to mind.
At the same time, Coupang Play has a somewhat different business model. Coupang Play is connected to Coupang's broader shopping ecosystem, meaning that users can access the streaming service as part of the wider Coupang membership experience. In this respect, its strategy is somewhat similar to Amazon's approach, where shopping and digital entertainment are combined within the same ecosystem.
This makes Coupang Play different from a traditional streaming-only service. For many users, the main reason for subscribing to Coupang is its shopping benefits, while Coupang Play becomes an additional benefit included with the membership. In other words, the streaming service does not necessarily have to compete with Netflix or Disney+ solely on the basis of being the user's primary entertainment platform.
This creates an interesting competitive structure in the Korean OTT market. Netflix and Disney+ can be seen as stronger players in terms of pure OTT streaming, while Coupang Play benefits from Coupang's huge shopping ecosystem and membership base. Because of this difference, the competition between these platforms is not exactly the same as a simple comparison between traditional streaming services.
Compared with some other countries, Korea's OTT market can therefore feel somewhat unique. Netflix and Disney+ compete mainly through content, original productions, and exclusive entertainment, while Coupang Play can use a different strategy by combining shopping, membership benefits, and streaming content.
Of course, this does not mean that Coupang Play is not competing in the OTT market. It continues to invest in original content, sports, entertainment programs, and other exclusive offerings. However, its biggest advantage is arguably the fact that OTT is only one part of the larger Coupang ecosystem.
For consumers, this can also make the choice of streaming services more complicated. Someone who mainly wants a pure streaming experience may prioritize Netflix or Disney+, while a Coupang customer may find Coupang Play attractive because it is already included as part of a broader shopping membership.
Ultimately, the Korean OTT market is not simply a battle between streaming platforms. It is also a competition between different business models. Netflix and Disney+ focus heavily on entertainment and streaming content, while Coupang Play combines entertainment with e-commerce and membership services. This combination makes the Korean market particularly interesting and gives Coupang Play a different kind of competitive advantage compared with traditional OTT platforms.
